Traditional Market in Siem Reap


Siem Reap has 3 principal permanent traditional markets: The Old Market (Psar Chas), the Center Market and the New Market (Psar Leu) in the eastern side of the river on National Highway 6. Each market has a different character and sells different kinds of things. The crowded Psar Chas is the most diverse, with everything else from fresh food to clothing, shoes, tools, household supplies and souvenirs.

You can have a manicure or get your hair washed, order a tailored suit, or just have clothes or shoes expertly mended. The additional roomy Center Market offers a more laid-back feel, with wider passageways and larger stalls. It supplies a large assortment of clothes and shoes, jewelry, silks, art work and other souvenirs; it's a great place to shop for gifts. The Last is Psar Leu, definitely the largest of the covered markets in Siem Reap.

Psar Leu is a Cambodian domestic market and therefore less targeted tourists, it is filled with many stalls selling clothing, fabrics, shoes, cosmetics, medicines, furniture and household goods, electrical appliances and electronic devices, and farming supplies. For the more adventurous, the crowded and cavernous halls of the Psar Leu is definitely an fascinating window on ordinary life in Cambodia, and also a good opportunity to test any Khmer products.

There are many smaller local street markets spread through the city.The majority of these markets are situated along the riverbanks close to the pagoda of Wat Bo and the north of the Highway 6 bridge; these are the traditional Khmer markets, where smallholders and farmers in the Siem Reap City come to sell their products and local artisans to apply their crafts and trades. Food stalls offer Khmer delicacies and fortune-tellers and practitioners of traditional medicines.

Psar Chas "Old Market"

Situated in the middle of old Siem Reap City, the Old Market is the conventional Cambodian market, most visited by tourists, supplying the greatest variety of souvenirs and curios. You will find souvenir sellers on every side off the market and towards the inside, particularly at the south (river) side - providing silks, silverworks, statuary, art and handicrafts, T-shirts, post cards, boot-legged DVDs and books wood carvings, stone carvings, Buddhas, paintings, rubbings, table mats...the list is countless.

Psar Chaa (Old Market) is very well stored with something. The streets in the section around the Old Market, particularly the nowadays famous Pub Street and Pub Street Alleys, roves a lot of tourist focused business such as art galleries and boutiques, restaurants, cafes, bars, massage and spas, book stores, a drugstore and much more.

Pub Street:After the sun sets, the focus changes securely a block east of the Old Market to the 'Pub Street' and the nearby alleys, so known as for the numerous and various restaurants and pubs which line Street 8. All of it started in 1998 when Angkor What? Bar opened up its doors. Currently Pub Street is packed end to end with restaurants, boutiques, shops and pubs as well as the numerous of the connecting alleys and passages, each with its own special character.

You will find many cuisines on and around Pub Street such as Khmer, Thai, French, Vietnamese, Indian, Italian and a number of other international foods. And also there are some pleasant small bars, cafes and restaurants in the mix too.

Psar Kandal "Central Market"

Just up the street from Old Market, is Psar Kandal "Central Market" situated on Sivatha Street, here you'll see largely souvenirs for sale. It's not as busy as the Old Market and you can easily walk across the Central Market without getting pestered so much from the sellers. The Central Market is targeted much more for tourists which is on a lot of visitor's lists of things to do in Siem Reap.

Psar Leu "Upper Market"

Psar Leu is the place where the locals come to shop. It's the main traditional market in Siem Reap to find anything such as pungent prahoc (fermented fish paste), fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, rice, clothing, spare parts for bicycles or motorbikes, kitchenware, large bed sheets, curtains or baby stuff and anything else a Cambodian family might desire. You won't find any souvenirs but a glimpse of true Khmer life, best early morning.

Phsar Thmey "New Market"

The New Market is situated around 3km from Siem Reap town center along the route to Phnom Penh on National Road No.6. It offers anything such as food products, house items, gold jewellery, fruit and vegetables, clothes etc. If you want some clothes produced by a tailor, then this is also the marketplace to visit as well. The New Market is mainly frequented by the locals and you'll see no more tourists here and you'll even see items cheaper than any of the other markets.
