Siem Reap has 3 principal permanent traditional markets: The
Old Market (Psar Chas), the Center Market and the New Market (Psar Leu) in the
eastern side of the river on National Highway 6. Each market has a different
character and sells different kinds of things. The crowded Psar Chas is the
most diverse, with everything else from fresh food to clothing, shoes, tools, household
supplies and souvenirs.
You can have a manicure or get your hair washed, order a
tailored suit, or just have clothes or shoes expertly mended. The additional
roomy Center Market offers a more laid-back feel, with wider passageways and
larger stalls. It supplies a large assortment of clothes and shoes, jewelry, silks,
art work and other souvenirs; it's a great place to shop for gifts. The Last is
Psar Leu, definitely the largest of the covered markets in Siem Reap.
Psar Leu is a Cambodian domestic market and therefore less
targeted tourists, it is filled with many stalls selling clothing, fabrics, shoes,
cosmetics, medicines, furniture and household goods, electrical appliances and
electronic devices, and farming supplies. For the more adventurous, the crowded
and cavernous halls of the Psar Leu is definitely an fascinating window on
ordinary life in Cambodia, and also a good opportunity to test any Khmer
products.
There are many smaller local street markets spread through
the city. The majority of these markets are situated along the riverbanks close
to the pagoda of Wat Bo and the north of the Highway 6 bridge; these are the
traditional Khmer markets, where smallholders and farmers in the Siem Reap City
come to sell their products and local artisans to apply their crafts and trades.
Food stalls offer Khmer delicacies and fortune-tellers and practitioners of
traditional medicines.
